I have a '96
80 series diesel. I have noticed recently a loud clunking noise when reversing hard, or reversing under load. The noise appears to be coming from the transmission area. Does anyone know of any problems Criusers have that may cause this?
Thanks a lot
Drew

Not familiar with your cruiser Drew, but it sounds like it might be a good idea to chock the wheels and get under your truck to have a good look at your rear mounts or maybe the driveline. You may have a broken mount or a universal on the way out.

Check the uni-joints and also the rear diff pinion. I had the same prob and the collapsible diff pinion had really collapsed. The noise only appeared on reverse.

Hi Andrew
It is a part time
80 - I have only noticed the clunking on 3 occasions. The first was when I was reversing up a rocky/slippery
hill in low range 4X4 -the noise is a continuous clunking (it is a bit hard to explain, as with any noise, but sounds like it is coming from below the drivers
seat, at about the same speed as someone knocking on a door). The second time was when I was reversing on a
soft beach in high 4X4, and the third was in High 2wd, hard reversing on loose dirt (being silly). I have had the Drive shaft universal joints replaced about 6 months ago, and the swivel hubs about months ago.
Any help is greatly appreciated
Thanks
Drew
